Topic: Outside Money to NASA (Donors Sponsors)

Page history last edited by Bradley Cheetham 15 years, 10 months ago

Background:  I found out today that NASA is only able to accept money that is specifically given to it from congress.  It cannot accept any other sources of funding.

Question:  Can any other government agency (NSF? NOAA? etc.) accept outside funding?

Thesis: Wealthy people sponsor planetariums, museums, university buildings, theaters, hospitals, etc. when they die and corporations sponsor arenas and stadiums.  What would the pros/cons be to allowing this type of sponsorship for NASA programs/equipment/missions/etc.

ex. The John Rockafeller Lunar Power Station.  Or the Pepsi deep space observatory.

I know this would be kind of 'selling out' but in the long run who cares what they are called as long as things are getting done?

Just an idea I had today when considering the set up of JPL.  So any more information on that case study would also likely assist the discussion.
