NEW!!!

PLEASE NOTE: The date on the 2016 Compendium may seem to be a "skip" in years. FAA AST did this intentionally, based on the following reasoning. The Compendium is published each January, showing that current year on the cover. It implies coverage of previous year's activities, but the Compendium has more than historical data in it. It is a summary of vehicles, activities, ideas, thinking and projections regarding the commercial space industry.

The day before this, Xombie had flown a beautiful first leg in Level One of the Northrop Grumman Lunar Lander Challenge

(a NASA Centennial Challenges competition) but the Masten team decided not to attempt the return flight because of thrust chamber damage.

The only person not in the picture, because he was taking the shot, is Ben Brockert. Thanks, Ben!

The following quotes are from "The Culture Code: An Ingenious Way to Understand Why People Around the World Live and Buy as They Do" by Clotaire Rapaille. All emphasis of text is mine.

  • "The Culture Code is the unconscious meaning we apply to any given thing." - Introduction
  • "The American Culture Code for America is DREAM." - Chapter 12 NEVER GROWING UP, NEVER GIVING UP The Code for America
  • "Remaining on Code means supporting our dreams and our dreamers. We want to encourage people to have big ideas, to take risks, and to learn from their mistakes. We want to promote reinvention and starting over." - Chapter 12

  • "America should never shut the door to exploration and discovery. As impractical as it seems, the space program is right on Code. The American journey to the moon is a landmark in the history of our culture and the history of the world. We were the first people ever to free ourselves from this planet and go to another one. Rather than closing down the space program because it costs too much and accomplishes too little, we should set grander goals. If going to Mars seems nearly impossible, it will be that much more satisfying to get there. Dreams are priceless." - Chapter 12

2009 January 08: The AIAA Commercial Space Group (CSG) led a tour to visit multiple sitesat the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station and NASA Kennedy Space Center, including the Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC40) which is where the SpaceX Falcon 9 launch vehicle is fully integrated and lying on its side. We were not allowed to get off the bus to get any closer than the parking lot located about one mile away. This is the best resolution picture I could get from that distance.

  • The Real Story on the Falcon 1 Launch Delay from Clark Lindsey's RLVNews.com: "Replacement of a nozzle due to a small defect was the reason the Falcon I launch missed its initial June launch window: Minute Defect Delays SpaceX's Falcon 1 Launch Again - SPACE.com. • SpaceX pushes back target date for next Falcon 1 launch - BY STEPHEN CLARK SPACEFLIGHT NOW - Posted: June 23, 2008 - The military informed SpaceX last week that mandatory support equipment and tracking stations in the Pacific Ocean are booked through the end of July, forcing officials to delay launch of the next Falcon 1 rocket, the company's founder said Friday. • A.C. Charania, author of the Planetary Defense Blog (primarily concerned with "relevant news of the threat to the planet from Near Earth Objects (NEOs) including concepts and designs for mitigation"), posts "Additional Notes on H.R. 6063" that gives the modified wording of the prize authorization language in the NASA Authorization Bill that recently passed the House. Even though this bill probably won't get passed, it's an indication of what the House legislators are thinking and might be used as guidance by the incoming administration.

2008 Jun 20:

  • The third flight of the SpaceX Falcon 1 rocket has been rescheduled from 23 June to 27 June.
  • I took notes at the Space Foundation's Space Business Forum in New York on Wendesday, 19 June, and the notes can be found in the Notes from Commercial Space Meetings file (scroll down to the bottom and start reading from the bottom up) or at www.tweme.com/newspace (not a complete set for some reason not all tweets made it into the newspace site on tweme).

2008 Jun 18:

  • I found out that everybody was getting notifications every time there were changes made to the wiki, so I stopped all email notifications to everybody and made the following setting changes:

    Notifications

Who receives notifications about changes to this wiki?

Send notifications to the user making the edit

    //

On login pages, disable notifications by default

I apologize for all those notifications to everybody, and if you STOP getting notifications and you'd like to get them again, I think you can make that change yourself in the "Settings" change... Sorry again!

  • This from Michael Mealling: "NEW YORK, New York (Space Business Forum: New York) Space Angels Network, LLC, a national network of seed- and early-stage investors focused on aerospace-related ventures, announced today its initial group of “Founding Members”—individual accredited investors with significant experience in aerospace ventures. Founding Members include: Esther Dyson of EDventure Holdings (www.edventure.com) in New York; Stephen Fleming of Atlanta Technology Angels (www.angelatlanta.com) in Georgia; David S. Rose of New York Angels (www.newyorkangels.com) in New York; and Ed Tuck of Falcon Fund (www.falconfund.com) in California." For more info, go to: tinyurl.com/5buywt.

2008 Jun 10:

  • I decided to give naming rights of this wiki page to Michael Mealling since he ponied up the $$$ to upgrade the wiki from the free (no cost) set of pages to what is called "Silver Status". Thanks Mike! Due to his generosity, we now have 10GB of file space (so I can start bringing files onto this site which otherwise would not have been able to be housed here)!
  • The NASA Academy folks, Brad Cheetham in particular, have begun posting on this wiki. The name of their project is "The Roadmap to a Space Faring Civilization" and they have created a folder called "The Roadmap" in this wiki to begin defining their project.

I thought that it was a shame that the pictures and captions from the CSWiki front page would be lost when replaced by the latest-and-greatest, so I thought I would "archive" them here.
