Centennial Challenges Success Stories

  • Astronaut Glove Challenge
    • Peter Homer Wins 2007 Astronaut Glove Challenge at New England Air Museum, Windsor Locks, CT
      • Starts a company called FlagSuit LLC, providing pressure gloves to Orbital Outfitters, manufacturers of low-cost pressure suits for emerging suborbital tourism companies.
      • 2008.10.23 - Charles Lurio reports that Orbital Outfitters is part of a team with Texas A&M and Dittmar Associates that has won a NASA contract to develop a concept for an advanced space suit.
  • Northrop Grumman Lunar Lander Challenge
    • Armadillo Aerospace competes with their LOx-Alcohol Quad vehicle named "Pixel" in, but does not win, the 2006 competition during the X PRIZE Cup event in Las Cruces, NM.
      • AA is approached by multiple space agencies and prime aerospace contractors to use their Quad vehicles for technology development work.
      • AA receives an SBIR Phase 1 award from Air Force Research Lab.
    • AA competes with their LOx-Alcohol Mod vehicle in, but does not win, the 2007 competition during the X PRIZE Cup event in Alamogordo, NM.
      • AA receives a NASA IPP Seed Fund award to develop a LOx-Methane engine.
      • AA further develops their 2,500 lbf propulsion system for use in the Rocket Racing League's Velocity XL-5 airframe. Successful demonstration of the system on 25-26 Aug 2008 leads to 6 orders (1 for the test system and an additional 5 for the other RRL aircraft). RRL Press Release
    • AA competes with the MOD and Quad vehicles in the 2008 LLC competition.
